By most accounts, Deepfolk are humanoid creatures that live in the deep waters of the vast. They are feared by all who live on the coastal regions and are blamed for most all unexplained problems that arise within these regions. Deepfolk, more than storms or careless captains, get the blame for mysteriously sunken ships.
No two accounts are identical when it come to their appearance, but there are similarities from one story to the next. They look like a combination of sea creature and man. They have been likened to octopus, squids, shark, eel, crab, lobster, dolphin, whale, fish, urchin, and just about any other creature that is likely to be found beneath the waves. Some say they can change shape, while others say they are the unholy union of drowned seamen and demons of the deep.
Whatever they are, they are the undisputed masters of the deep waters, and do not permit trespass into their domain. Because of their prowess, and the ease at which they can overcome anything that floats it has been thought that they are forbidden to bring their attacks into the shallow waters of the shelf surrounding the known world. No evidence has ever been found of a single ship being attacked unless it had left the shelf.
